What are my tintype options?
Portraits and Still-Life
-
4 x 5
$100
Our most affordable tintype, a 4x5 plate is great for head-and-shoulders portraits of 1-2 people, possibly a wider shot with three folks, if one of them is small. It’s also a great choice for still life images of important keepsakes, wedding bouquets, grandfather’s watch, etc. Because the smaller size is a little easier to work with, this is a great option if you want to shoot multiple individual portraits (for example, individual portraits of all the kids) in one sitting. We can shoot a full-body outdoors portrait with 4x5, but keep in mind that with the smaller plate, everything on it (including faces!) will be smaller and harder to see. -
5 x 7
$175
5x7 is a ‘taller’ vertical proportion than either 4x5 or 8x10, great for portraits of 1-3, 4 if some are small. Ourdoors we can also shoot horizontally and might be able to fit in an additional person, or include a wider ‘landscape’ style setting in your image. This may be my favorite size for an individual portrait! -
8 x 10
$250
Although it sounds twice as big, mathematicians can confirm that 8x10 actually has four times the area of a 4x5 plate, giving us a big beautiful format for your big beautiful images. 8x10 is the perfect size for a group shot in a special location. For an heirloom portrait of an individual or couple, this size showcases the detail and rich tone of the tintype process. For still-life images, we have space to style and arrange multiple objects, and really get some layers to the space.

Gem-style Tintype
$150
In the 1860s, a Gem Camera (purportedly called that because of the ‘gemlike’ quality of the tiny images) might take 9 or even 15 images at a time! Our version can either shoot 4 simultaneous images or four individual pictures on a single 4x5 plate. The complexity making multiple exposures means that this option will take a little longer to shoot, and getting all four faces perfect is not guaranteed! With less control over the exposure and focus, this is a great option for more casual shots, and a way to get four copies of the same portrait made simultaneously. Architectural Photography
Contact for Pricing
Whether it’s celebrating a new family home, making keepsake images of an historic home using period-appropriate technology, or simply documenting a neighborhood, architectural tintypes are a beloved heirloom and a great conversation piece. Price and scheduling depend on location and complexity of the shoot, but are typically in the $3k to $5k range, and can incorporate both overall images and details. With a background in architecture and a strong interest in historic preservation, these are a joy to shoot. -
Digital to Tintype
Contact for Pricing
For out-of-town folks or events, we can also produce a tintype from a digital file. Results will depend on the original image (the tintype process is generally contrastier and less forgiving of an inadequate exposure) and the process will take additional time, but it does allow the possibility of digital editing to fix any flaws in the source image. We’ve made tintypes of parents who couldn’t travel for a shoot, tintype versions of photos from significant events, and consulted with artists looking to see how their own work looked on tin. We can also arrange custom framing and shipping of the finished piece. If you’re interested in digital-to-tintype, please reach out to see if the image is a good candidate.
If your original image was professionally shot (a wedding portrait, for example) we will require a release from the original photographer before it can be duplicated.
